The complicity of the media in covering up the UFO phenomenon
Terry Hansen is an independent Canadian journalist, interested in scientific controversies and political involvement in the mass media. He followed, for decades, the UFO controversy and wrote about it
In his book: The Missing Times: News media complicity in the UFO Cover-up, published in 2001, as well as in an article from 2009, Hansen shows that some of the most influential news organizations maintained close ties with the espionage community of the USA and deliberately suppressed the complete and correct presentation of the UFO phenomenon, for various reasons of national security.
In the Second World War, American journalists were proud to abandon the traditional ideal of telling the truth, in order — initially out of patriotic spirit — to work for the government, censoring the news and composing official lies. During the creation of weapons such as the nuclear bomb, even draconian legislation regarding secrecy was put in place; because of it, for example, many scientific discoveries could no longer be published.
Thus, according to Hansen’s opinion, the psychological foundations of a schizoid American society were laid. People became less and less able to perceive the true proportions of the self-deception to which they were subjected, which allowed the proliferation of “black budget” programs. Fortunately, despite the harsh penalties, not everyone followed these rules. They came to light regularly, at the end of some legislative actions, or accidentally, documents kept secret for a long time. The Internet also played an important role in changing the rules.
